Substructure of Flagellar Tubules
نویسنده
چکیده
The 9 + 2 array of ciliary and fiagellar tubules was described in the early days of electron micros-copy when osmium tetroxide was the standard fixative. Cytoplasmic microtubules, which are not generally in evidence after osmium tetroxide fixation, were rarely seen until after the advent of aldehyde fixatives. In some glutaraldehyde-OsO4-fixed material, flagellar and ciliary tubules are

Identification of the M-ring protein of the flagellar motor of Salmonella typhimurium.
The M ring is a substructure of the flagellar basal body of bacteria, which lies in the cytoplasmic membrane and is therefore close to the site where the energy of the transmembrane proton potential is converted into mechanical work of rotation of the motor. The protein from which this ring is constructed has not been identified. Flagellar hook-basal body complexes from Salmonella typhimurium w...
متن کاملExceptions to the Prevailing Pattern of Tubules (9 + 9 + 2) in the Sperm Flagella of Certain Insect Species
Various deviations from classical 9 + 2 flagellar structure are found in sperm of insect species. In mature spermatozoa of a psocid, Psocus, the outer flagellar tubules are not straight, but are disposed in a long-pitched helix such that they form an angle of about 8 degrees with a single dense rod located in the position usually occupied by the central pair. In young spermatids of Psocus the o...

متن کاملFlagellum mutants of Chlamydomonas reinhardii.
Mutants blocked in different stages of flagellar development were isolated and examined by light and electron microscopy. Flagellum-less mutants had normal basal bodies but lacked the flagellar shaft and showed abnormalities in the transitional region. Stumpy mutants had very short flagellar shafts in which electrondense material, sometimes arranged in sheet-like arrays, accumulated in the spac...
متن کاملFlagellar Motion and Fine Structure of the Flagellar Apparatus in Chlamydomonas
The biflagellate alga Chlamydomonas reinhardi was studied with the light and electron microscopes to determine the behavior of flagella in the living cell and the structure of the basal apparatus of the flagella. During normal forward swimming the flagella beat synchronously in the same plane, as in the human swimmer's breast stroke. The form of beat is like that of cilia. Occasionally cells sw...
